Aren't we as a society tired of owning things we know nothing about? How many of us own a car and can change the oil. No, how many of us can even change a tire? So few, it's sad really. And what about technology we feel entitled to? Yeah, those unlocked GSM cell phones in your pocket, what facts, if any, do you know about it? Well, now it's time to learn. The first mobile phone was made in 1973 by Martin Cooper, the manager of Motorola. On the matter at hand, Cooper is quoted as saying "People want to talk to other people -- not a house, or an office, or a car. Given a choice, people will demand the freedom to communicate wherever they are, unfettered by the infamous copper wire. It is that freedom we sought to vividly demonstrate in 1973." That first mobile phone, which he used in New York City to make the first mobile call to his competitor, was the size of a brick and weighed over 30 ounces.
